Wabi-Sabi, perfectly imperfect!
I think the roshi probably was more interested in nurturing his students' natural 'growth' than in having them 'improve' in some pre-conceived way.
Funny! I love the tang of paradox. This is so true- I have a clear sense of both my imperfection or need for improvement, and of perfection, that aspect of my existence where no improvement is needed or possible. Thanks Tom:)
Hi Diane, that's neat - 'perfectly imperfect.'Hi Colleen, yes, I think the roshi had a twinkle in his eye when he said that. BTW, did you see the short video I posted (on FB) of him?
The wisdom is all in the humor in this jaunty remark. Wonderful!
